North Dakota has become the first state in the U.S. to allow law enforcement to use weaponized drones.
Though North Dakota prohibits the use of ‘lethal’ weapons on drones under North Dakota House Bill 1328, it does NOT prohibit the use of any ‘non-lethal’ weapons, including tear gas, pepper spray, tasers, sound cannons, rubber bullets, etc, which means law enforcement is authorized to use any of these weapons on drones.
According to Justin Glawe’s excellent and comprehensive article in the Daily Beast the original draft of Representative Rick Becker’s bill banned all weapons on police drones and limited their use to obtain a search warrant from a judge in order to use a drone to search for criminal evidence.
Then Bruce Burkett of the North Dakota Peace Officer’s Association amended the bill.
“This is one I’m not in full agreement with. I wish it was any weapon,”Becker, the bill’s Republican sponsor said at a hearing in March. “In my opinion there should be a nice, red line: Drones should not be weaponized. Period.”
This means that law enforcement is legally allowed to hammer you with tear gas, pepper spray, tasers, sound cannons, rubber bullets, above from an unmanned drone.
The Daily Beast report also found the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Department public records on the use of surveillance drones have not matched up with FAA records.
Further they did not reply to multiple requests for comment regarding the discrepancy between the FAA’s numbers and their own.
Absolutely terrifying. You give them an inch… they destroy the constitution and double down on the police state.
You ask me or Chicago Tribune writer Eric Zorn, drones should be banned period. And not for commercial use. How soon will weaponized target a specific individual by means of facial recognition? I would not at all be surprised if it’s not happening already.
